algorhythms
A reexamination of Masculinity.
“Algorhythms” is my opportunity to take risks and build my work in deeper and more intentional means that I have before. I want to create a jumping point for dialogue and action to move conversations from a problem-seeking space to a problem-solving space when it comes to masculinity. I want to ask questions and deep-dive specifically on "masculinity" with a focus on how it comes up in black communities, such as:
- How is masculinity presented and received in the context of today's generation/social media?
- What are the different ways people interact with/utilize masculinity?
- Who defines masculinity?
- How do people who embrace masculinity feel they are seen by people outside of that? as well as
- How do people who embrace masculinity see others who embrace masculinity in ways foreign or contradictory to their personal definition?
- What is expected of those who embrace masculinity?
- What does self-care, reteaching, and healthy reintegration loodfk like while being in community with people who have been victims of masculinity?
I hope to gather multiple small cohorts of individuals to begin the process of discussing and unpacking major themes listed above, and others that are birthed out of dialogues both in New Orleans and Los Angeles between the months of November 2023 - February 2024. The learnings from the gatherings are to be used as a starting point for movement generation for a major dance work. Planned to debut in 2024, I currently have two grants in review for this project, and have shared my ideas with Kesha McKey, Artistic Director of KM Dance Project (New Orleans, LA,) who has agreed to support this piece as part of their upcoming 2024 company showcase.
